Who Else?
Who else would pack up your troubles
And put them back on the shelf?
Who else would tell you to be good?
But be good to yourself?
Who else would sit in a corner?
With his head in his hands
Crying “I need you” to nobody there?
Who else would hold you in his arms?
And ask for nothing more?
Who else would turn out the light?>
And softly walk out the door?
Who else would lie in the dark alone
And awake at night
Crying “I need you” to nobody there?
So much time is lost
For one who keeps waiting
For a light in the distance
A light that keeps fading
Into the night, into the waves of confusion
Into the sight and sound of illusion
And so it stands for all time
Out of your sight, out of my mind
Who else would pretend to be strong
And find his strength in your eyes?
Who else would wake up find
It’s all been dreams and lies?
Who else would gamble his sanity
On a touch or a smile
Crying “I need you” to nobody there?

Unrequited love has provided writers with so much material, you just
knew I would have at least one song on my list that celebrates it, didn't
you?
Back in late 1991 I took a fancy to someone about 15 years
younger (I was 40 and she was 25), and she told me I was too old for her
but wanted to be my friend. I suppose this was about as close as I was going
to get to her, so I a settled in for a permanent niche in the "Friend
Zone."
From a deeper perspective in time, this was actually a blessing,
as it allowed me to be a good friend, generous with my time and a comfort
to someone in need. As a lover, I would have just been another self-absorbed,
jealous suitor, with no redeeming qualities. Not a bad tradeoff, really.
