Too Long Ago and Far Away
You’ve got to give some to get some
That’s what she told me
It was too long ago and far away
I remember those words
As she spoke them to me one night
It was too long ago and far away
Now there's just this empty space between us
Where there once was passion and sweet desire
Now it’s just another scrapbook on the fire
Burning in the ashes of a distant memory
It's a two-way street through a one-horse town
That's what they told me
It was too long ago and far away
I remember those words
As they told them to me back when
It was too long ago and far away
I would simply say I’m sorry
For the way things might have been
But you know it’s not that easy
When you pack it up, and start it over again

The first line of this song was something my first wife said to me the
first or second night after our wedding. The song itself was written 15
years later when such words were "too long ago and far away" to
do much good.
No matter how relieved I was the marriage was over, 15 years
is a very long time, and the thought of "another scrapbook on the fire"
affected me deeply. If not the saddest, it was certainly the most honest
of a string of divorce-inspired songs.
