Today Is My Birthday
Another year older
This room just gets colder
And I can’t believe I’m alive
The pain’s not so bad if I don’t get too sad
For me that’s the way to survive
I’m nobody’s fool. I don’t try to be cool.
As for you, I just want your time
So don’t ask my why, just give it a try
And just be a good friend tonight
Today is my birthday
And I need some kind of party to go to
Where the women are sweet
And the men that I meet
Are all such good buddies of mine
I’m nobody’s fool. I don’t try to be cool.
We’ve both been through that before
In the good times and bad, we were fit to be had
And we’ll see a whole lot more
It’s good to hear the sound of voices
Laughing in the night
Just like a song I once knew
It’s 2 a.m. closing and I’m not supposing
That I’ve worn my welcome out yet
You’re sitting so close, and nobody knows
That hours ago we just met
We've already kissed
And I know I'll be missed
So why don't we give it a try?
It's all I can do to keep my hands off of you
So just be a good friend tonight

1991. Pulling the birthday card is a time-honored method of seduction,
and the singer here uses it shamelessly. I envisioned Buck Owens singing
the chorus, but the rest of the song is more of a Charley Rich kind of ballad.
I never used this method by the way, but I can see how it
might work — especially in hands of a skilled entertainer.
