The Best Years
When I think of all my blessings
And the beauty I have known
In the music of a baby’s laugh
And her first steps on her own
When I look up on a summer night
And I see my lucky star shine bright
It’s only because I’m living
The best years of my life
They may not be that perfect
But they’re really not that bad
When I think of all the good times
And all the good friends I’ve had
So if I seem too easy
Too sure and satisfied
It’s only because I’m living
The best years of my life
1992. I believe that prayers of gratitude are the first ones heard because
they're so rare. I was living in Davis, taking a chance on a new city, and
a new neighborhood, commuting 30 miles a day to my job in Sacramento, mysteriously
happy in my solitude and grateful that I could be.
So I took a guitar theme I'd been working on for several weeks
and just poured these lyrics into the melody over it. So, in a sense, this
song was and is my prayer of gratitude.
